Asbestos in World War I Gas Masks: A Cautionary Tale from History

Asbestos Containing Gas Mask found at a School- WestCross

In a remarkable encounter with history, WestCross Environmental Services was recently called to a local school where a surprising discovery was made—a World War I-era gas mask suspected of containing asbestos.

Historical Context of Asbestos Use in Gas Masks

During the tumultuous times of the World Wars, gas masks were a common protective measure against the horrific chemical warfare that characterised these conflicts. Essential for both military personnel and civilians, these masks were equipped with filters designed to provide the best protection against toxic gases. Unbeknownst to many at the time, these filters were made from asbestos, chosen for its excellent filtration capabilities and resistance to heat.

The use of asbestos in these filters was largely due to its ability to trap toxic particles effectively. However, the very properties that made asbestos valuable also made it extremely hazardous, as the fine fibres could easily be inhaled, leading to severe respiratory issues years later.

Discovery and Safety Measures

The recent discovery was made during a routine visit by our Director, Terry, who was called to safely inspect and collect the historical item from the school’s caretaker. This instance highlights the often-unexpected places where asbestos can still be found and the ongoing risks associated with it.

Implications for Educators and Collectors

This finding serves as a crucial reminder of the pervasive legacy of asbestos use. Schools, museums, and collectors holding or displaying older artifacts like gas masks must be vigilant. It’s essential to assess these items for asbestos to prevent accidental exposure.

WestCross Environmental Services commends the proactive approach taken by the school’s caretaker in handling the situation responsibly. This proactive approach not only ensures the safety of the school environment but also preserves the educational value of historical artifacts.

Expertise and Guidance

We urge educators, collectors, and the general public to consult with asbestos removal experts if they suspect they have items containing asbestos. Managing these items safely is crucial to preventing health risks associated with asbestos exposure.
